A few months ago we posed the question, "Can cow poop run your car?" The answer was a resounding yes.
Well it turns out the new Toyota Mirai can run on a lot more than that! Presenting the next in the "Fueled by Everything" series:
Electrolysis is a process by which electricity is run through water, splitting it into its atomic parts: hydrogen, and water. The students in Titusville High School's AP Chemistry class learn the equation:
2H20 + 4e- ==> 2H2 + O2 + 4e-
If you do not possess that particular mix of brilliant and crazy that led you to study chemistry, you may have forgotten this formula. In English, it means, "Take two water molecules, expose them to four electrons, and boom! You get hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. Oh, and the electrons are still there too."
Titusville students, in short, are learning the basic tools to create hydrogen fuel, which can be used to power a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, like the Toyota Mirai.
