The Toyota Prius pioneered the hybrid vehicle category over 15 years ago, and still is iconic in all that is represents: being eco-conscious, sensible, progressive. The 2017 Prius, the fourth generation, arrives with a distinctive new look (what would be a Prius be, if not distinctive) and an even stingier hybrid gasoline engine than the previous version. Tom Voelk, auto critic for The New York Times, has the review.

The new Prius Eco model has an EPA-rated fuel economy rating of 58 city, 54 highway. The Prius does hybridy kinds of things. Coasting and braking charges the battery, and the gas engine shuts down at stoplights. Typically, the car initially pulls away on electric power before the gas engine smoothly feathers in. The EV Mode allows all-electric travel at low speeds for short distances. Using gauges on the improved LCD screen, drivers can track their fuel efficiency like a game (far safer than playing Pokémon Go at the wheel).
